ILBS runs admission cycles across three distinct programme categories. DM, M.Ch, and DNB super-specialty admissions are governed by NEET SS conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). PDCC admissions use an ILBS-conducted written exam and interview, with two batches annually in January and July. Ph.D admissions run once a year with a July commencement.

DM, M.Ch, and DNB admissions for the 2026-27 academic session are based on NEET SS 2026 scores, with NBE counselling expected to follow in late 2026. The entrance examination accepted for each programme at ILBS is as follows:

Ph.D admissions for the 2027 batch are expected to open in March-April 2027, with written examinations in May-June 2027 and programme commencement in July 2027. The 2026 Ph.D admission cycle has concluded.

ILBS offers a focused portfolio of super-specialty and research programmes. The fees for each programme are listed below.

• DM (3 years) -- Hepatology; Organ Transplant Anaesthesia and Critical Care; Paediatric Hepatology. Total fees: INR 3,30,000 per programme.
• M.Ch (3 years) -- Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery. Total fees: INR 2,10,000.
• DNB (3 years) -- Nephrology. Total fees: INR 95,000.
• M.Sc Nursing (2 years). Total fees: INR 70,000.
• Ph.D (minimum 3 years) -- Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Nutrition, Epidemiology, Hepatology, Molecular Medicine, Nursing. Total fees: INR 70,000 - INR 2,60,000 (varies by discipline).
• Post Doctoral Certificate Course / PDCC (1 year) -- 22 specialisations in hepatology, transplant, and biliary sciences. Total fees: INR 80,000.
• Fellowship in Advanced Hepatology (1 year, INR 80,000); Post Graduate Certificate Courses (INR 45,000); Certificate Courses (INR 38,000).

Admission to DM, M.Ch, and DNB programmes is through NEET SS, conducted by the National Board of Examinations. PDCC, M.Sc Nursing, and Ph.D admissions are handled directly by ILBS through their own entrance examinations.

For PDCC, candidates must apply online during the application window, appear for the written exam, and clear a personal interview. For Ph.D, candidates with JRF or GATE qualifications are exempt from the written test and go directly to the interview stage.

ILBS DM and M.Ch super-specialty graduates reported a median salary of INR 47 LPA in 2023-24, with a 100% placement rate at leading government academic medical centres and private tertiary hospitals.

NIRF Medical 2025 ranks ILBS at 28 (score: 59.22), improving from rank 34 in 2024. As per MyKollege Ranking 2026, ILBS is ranked 347 out of 527 Medical institutions nationally and 11th in New Delhi.

The ILBS campus is located at D-1, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. The attached hospital has 300+ operational beds (549 sanctioned), including 74 ICU beds and four advanced modular operation theatres. ILBS has performed over 900 liver transplants, making it one of the highest-volume dedicated liver transplant centres in India.

ILBS is India's first mono-super-specialty hospital and academic institution dedicated exclusively to liver and biliary diseases. It holds deemed university status under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act and is regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

ILBS, New Delhi, is an autonomous deemed-to-be university established in 2009 by the Government of NCT Delhi and inaugurated in January 2010. The institute offers DM, M.Ch, DNB, M.Sc Nursing, Ph.D, and various certificate and fellowship programmes in liver and biliary sciences.

ILBS offers only post-graduate and doctoral-level programmes. It does not offer MBBS or general PG MD/MS degrees. All clinical programmes are at the DM, M.Ch, or DNB super-specialty level, making ILBS one of the few institutions in India that trains exclusively at the tertiary super-specialty tier.

All three DM programmes carry an annual fee of INR 1,10,000 each, totalling INR 3,30,000 over three years. Ph.D (science disciplines) fees are structured as INR 38,000 in Year 1 and INR 8,000 per year thereafter, reaching INR 70,000 over the minimum 5-year duration. Ph.D (Nursing) carries an annual fee of INR 45,000-60,000, totalling INR 2,60,000 over 5 years.

DM, M.Ch, and DNB (Super-Specialty)

DM and M.Ch admissions at ILBS follow the national NEET SS pathway. Candidates must hold a recognised MD or MS degree in the relevant parent discipline, along with NMC/MCI registration.

• DM Hepatology: MD General Medicine, MD Paediatrics, or recognised equivalent.
• DM Paediatric Hepatology: MD Paediatrics or recognised equivalent.
• DM Organ Transplant Anaesthesia and Critical Care: MD Anaesthesiology or equivalent.
• M.Ch Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery: MS General Surgery, MS Surgical Gastroenterology, or equivalent.
• Selection stages: NEET SS score - NBE counselling registration - seat allotment - document verification - admission confirmation.

PDCC (Post Doctoral Certificate Course)

PDCC admissions run on an ILBS-conducted process, twice annually. The July 2026 batch is currently in the interview stage.

• Eligibility: MD / MS / DM / MCh / DNB / MDS or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the chosen PDCC specialisation.
• Process: Online application - ILBS written entrance exam - personal interview - merit-based selection.
• Bond: A security bond of INR 2,00,000 on non-judicial stamp paper is required. It is forfeited only if the candidate does not complete the programme.

Ph.D Programmes

Ph.D admissions run annually for a July commencement. Candidates holding active JRF (CSIR / UGC / ICMR) or GATE qualifications are exempted from the written entrance exam and proceed directly to the departmental interview. JRF scholars continue receiving their monthly fellowship from the funding agency throughout the programme.

• Eligibility (science disciplines): M.Sc or MD or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Nutrition, Epidemiology, Hepatology, or Molecular Medicine.
• Eligibility (Nursing): M.Sc Nursing with relevant clinical experience.
• Application fee: INR 1,000 (non-refundable). Programme fee: INR 20,000 (registration, covering the doctoral tenure).

M.Sc Nursing

ILBS conducts a dedicated entrance exam for M.Sc Nursing. Admission is merit-based on entrance exam performance.

• Eligibility: B.Sc Nursing (4-year or Post-Basic) with minimum 55% aggregate and at least 1 year of clinical experience at a hospital with 100 or more beds.
• Entrance exam: 75 MCQs, 1.5 hours, conducted by ILBS. Selection on merit.

ILBS trains a small, highly specialised cohort each year. Career outcomes for DM and M.Ch graduates reflect the acute national shortage of trained hepato-biliary specialists. Graduates join government academic centres and leading private tertiary hospitals, with salaries at the top of the super-specialist range.

In 2023-24, all 16 DM and M.Ch super-specialty graduates were placed, with a median salary of INR 47 LPA and a 100% placement rate. The three-year trend shows consistent salary growth:

ILBS reported a 100% placement rate for DM and M.Ch graduates in the 2023-24 batch. The median salary for that batch was INR 47 LPA.

Confirmed employers across recent batches include AIIMS Delhi, PGI Chandigarh, Apollo Hospitals, Medanta - The Medicity, Fortis Hospitals, Max Healthcare, Global Hospital, and Artemis Hospitals. Ph.D graduates primarily pursue post-doctoral positions, faculty roles at medical colleges, or research positions at government health research bodies.

ILBS also reported 9 Ph.D graduates (full-time) in 2023-24, up from 2 in each of the two preceding years.

ILBS is ranked 28 in NIRF Medical 2025 (score: 59.22), improving from rank 34 in 2024. Its Teaching, Learning and Resources score stands at 85.08 in 2025, reflecting the quality of clinical training at a dedicated single-specialty centre.

Four advanced modular operation theatres support complex hepato-biliary and transplant surgical procedures. ILBS has conducted over 900 liver transplants, with both adult and paediatric liver transplant programmes running concurrently.

This dual paediatric-adult liver transplant capability is held by very few centres in India. The hospital operates a 24-hour emergency department, a blood bank, advanced pathology and radiology units, and a liver transplant intensive care unit.

The research environment at ILBS is active, with faculty supported by Ramanujan and Ramalingaswami fellowships from the Department of Biotechnology. ILBS leads in concentrated liver case volume from a single-purpose centre, availability of 22 PDCC sub-specialty tracks in hepatology-related disciplines, and a dedicated liver transplant unit running at high volume year-round.

Is NEET SS mandatory for DM admission at ILBS?

Yes. DM, M.Ch, and DNB admissions at ILBS are based on NEET SS scores conducted by the National Board of Examinations. Candidates must hold a recognised MD or MS in the relevant parent discipline. NBE counselling follows the NEET SS result to determine seat allotment.

PDCC applicants must hold an MD, MS, DM, MCh, DNB, or MDS in a discipline relevant to the chosen specialisation. ILBS conducts a written entrance exam and personal interview for selection.

Two batches run annually in January and July. A security bond of INR 2,00,000 is required, which is forfeited only on non-completion of the course.

The total fee for each of the three DM programmes is INR 3,30,000 for the full 3-year duration. This is charged at INR 1,10,000 per year.
