Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University - [IRS]

The Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) was established in 1982 by Anna University with funds from the Government of Tamil Nadu[reference:0][reference:1]. It originated from the first 'Survey School' in the country established in 1978[reference:2]. The institute is rated as one of the best in the country in Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System, and Large Scale Mapping[reference:3].

It functions as an autonomous unit of Anna University, governed by an executive committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor[reference:4]. The institute has about 2400 square metres of built-up space with sophisticated instruments and machinery worth Rs. 150 million[reference:5].

IRS is also a member of the UN-GGIM Network[reference:6]. It has received support from the Federal Republic of Germany (7 million DM) and the Royal Norwegian Government (1.1 crores)[reference:7]. The institute's mission is to develop and impart technical knowledge in Civil and Geo-Informatics Engineering through teaching, research, and consultancy[reference:8].
