About this Scholarship

The Aga Khan Foundation – International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) provides financial assistance to outstanding postgraduate students from developing countries who lack alternative means of funding their education. The programme aims to develop effective scholars and future leaders, preparing them for professional careers that contribute to community and regional development.

Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant and 50% loan basis through a highly competitive application process. Funding is structured to assist with tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of the approved program.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Records: Applicants must have an excellent academic record.
  • Educational Background: Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/professional experience.
  • Financial Need & Funding Plan: Must demonstrate genuine financial need and construct a thoughtful, reliable, multi-source funding plan. Awards are provided based on need, but the AKF ISP should be considered a resource of last resort; applicants are expected to secure multiple sources of funding to reduce the requested award amount.
  • Institutional Admission: Must be admitted to a reputable postgraduate institution. Priority is given to Master’s degree programmes, though applications for PhD studies are also considered. Local or regional universities and distance learning programmes are acceptable only if course quality is maintained.
  • Personal & Leadership Achievements: Must possess strong leadership potential, professional experience, extracurricular and/or entrepreneurial achievements, and volunteer contributions.
  • Age Preference: Preference is given to young professionals under 30 years of age.
  • Ineligible Programs & Applicants: Part-time programmes and short-term courses are not eligible. Applications are also not considered from students who have already enrolled in or commenced their postgraduate studies.
