Finding your place and establishing yourself in a new country is not always easy, particularly for immigrant women. Research from Halmstad University, in collaboration with University West, shows that education, social networks, personal drive and a sense of belonging play a crucial role when women with a migration background find their way into Swedish society.

For two days at the end of April, Halmstad University hosted the first network meeting for the Knowledge Foundation’s jubilee doctoral students, a major initiative aimed at supporting the next generation of collaborative researchers. The University welcomed 44 doctoral students from 22 universities to focus on the co-production of knowledge and how collaboration with external partners can contribute to impactful research that benefits society.

Last week, the academic year at Halmstad University ended with a joyful and active week with many events to draw attention to all the students who graduated. It was everything from the graduation fair Utexpo, and scholarship awards to the final in the form of the graduation ceremony at Halmstad Arena.

Almost 40 years ago, this year’s Alumnus of the Year, Anders Åhlander, began studying the then two-year mechatronics programme at Halmstad University. At the time, the University was located in the Eketånga area, a few kilometres outside central Halmstad. Anders Åhlander describes his years as a student as being shaped by the small and close-knit environment at the University.

Johan Söderman is a new Professor of Education at Halmstad University. His research focuses on learning that takes place outside the formal structures of school – in music, civil society associations and other environments where people are driven by interest and engagement.

Professor Emeritus Hans Landström has been appointed Honorary Doctor in Innovation Sciences at Halmstad University. During the 1990s, Hans Landström was employed at the University and played a decisive role in establishing the fields of business administration and entrepreneurship at the University. In 1999, he was appointed as one of Halmstad University’s first five professors.
