Aliah University is a self-governing university under the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education in the Government of Bengal. Aliah University, formerly known as Mohammedan College of Calcutta, was established in 1780. The Aliah University Act (Act XXVII of 2007) established the institute as a university in 2008.
