About the Institution

The College of Fisheries, Mangalore, was established in 1969 by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, as the first fisheries college in India under the agricultural university system[reference:0][reference:1]. It is now part of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar[reference:2][reference:3]. The college has twin campuses: the main campus at Yekkur, Kankanady, Mangalore, which houses the administrative block, library, departments of Aquaculture, Fisheries Microbiology, Fisheries Resources and Management, and Aquatic Environment Management, along with hostels, a guest house, auditorium, sports complex, and swimming pool; and the Technology Wing at Hoige Bazar, near the mouth of the Nethravathy River, which houses the departments of Fish Processing Technology and Fisheries Engineering Technology[reference:4][reference:5]. The college has 35 faculty members and offers B.F.Sc. (4 years), M.F.Sc. (2 years), and Ph.D. programs in Fisheries Sciences[reference:6][reference:7]. The M.F.Sc. and Ph.D. programs have branches in Aquaculture, Fisheries Microbiology, Fish Processing Technology, Fisheries Resources and Management, Fisheries Environment and Ecology, and Fisheries Engineering Technology[reference:8]. The college has advanced scientific labs, including a Microbial Resource Centre recognized by UNESCO, a Disease Diagnostic Centre, and labs for Nutrition and Histopathology, Post-Harvest, Bioinformatics, Fishery Engineering, and remote sensing[reference:9]. The library is one of the best fisheries libraries in the country, with over 14,000 books, 2,700 technical reports, and 55 journals[reference:10][reference:11]. The college also has a placement cell, though its effectiveness has been questioned by some students[reference:12][reference:13].
