About this Scholarship

The Centre For Development Studies offers scholarships for Indian students through its MPhil and PhD programmes in Applied Economics and Economics. The programmes are affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and commenced on August 1, 2005. The programme details are available on the CDS website.

The MPhil Programme is open to students with a Master's degree in Economics or related disciplines with a minimum of 50% marks. The PhD Programme requires a Master's degree in Economics or related disciplines with a minimum of 50% marks, or an MPhil degree with a minimum FGPA of 6 on a 10-point scale, or a qualifying score in the UGC/ICAR NET.

Fellowships are available for both programmes, with a monthly stipend of Rs. 3000 for MPhil and Rs. 6000 for PhD. The UGC JRF can also be availed for both programmes. Additionally, the Journalism Education Trust Fellowship is available for journalists and postgraduates in Journalism to undergo the MPhil programme.

  • MPhil Programme: Master's in Economics with 50% marks or in other Social Science / Humanities subjects with 55% or in Science subjects with 60%.
  • Professionals with Bachelor's degree in technology, medical sciences, and legal studies are also encouraged.
  • PhD Programme: (i) Master's in Economics with 50% marks or in related disciplines in development studies with 55% marks and (ii) M Phil with FGPA of 6 on a 10-point scale or Qualifying the NET of UGC/ICAR.
  • The MPhil requirement can be waived for those with research experience and good calibre publications and/or PG level teaching experience and those who have qualified for UGC JRF in relevant disciplines.
