Common Law Admission Test for undergraduate and postgraduate law programs at NLUs.
Overview
The NLUs released the CLAT 2026 Second Merit List on 22nd January 2026. If you are in the second list, you can pay the confirmation fee for “Freeze” and “Float” till 29th January 2026.
The third merit list will be released by 5th February, whereas the 4th and 5th allotment lists are expected on 2 May and 15 May 2026, respectively.
- The admissions in CLAT 2026 are conducted for 25 participating NLUs, which offer 3,000 to 3,200 UG seats in total.
- In Round 1, around 100% of the available seats are open for allotment, whereas others will involve seat upgrades, withdrawals, and distribution of vacant seats.
The AIR 1 to 100 candidates secured seats in the 1st Round. AIR under 500 got in Tier 1 NLUs, whereas AIR 500 to 1500 are expected to get seats in Round 2 to 3.
By CLAT 2026, around 3,500+ seats will be offered in 24 participating NLUs, in which the top 5 will close the rank between the top 200 and 500, as per the previous year's trends.

What is the CLAT Exam 2026?
The CLAT 2026 is a national-level entrance examination, which is conducted every year for admission into UG (5-Year LLB) and PG (LLM) programs, which are offered by 24 NLUs in India.

The CLAT Exam will follow a negative marking system, with each correct answer being 1 mark and -0.25 marks for every incorrect answer.

Eligibility
The Consortium of NLUs sets the CLAT exam eligibility for students for admission into law courses. To be eligible for the CLAT 2026 exam, you must meet the CLAT Eligibility 2026:
- Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination.
- Minimum Marks: The CLAT exam eligibility marks are: General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI: 45% or equivalent. SC/ST: 40% or equivalent.
- CLAT age eligibility: There is no upper age limit for the CLAT exam.
- Nationality: Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, and PIOs are eligible to apply. Foreign nationals are also eligible for CLAT 2026, but through the NRI quota.

What is the CLAT Syllabus 2026?

In 2024, a change was implemented in the exam pattern by reducing the number of questions from 150 – 120. However, no expectations of change in the syllabus are kept this year. - Make long-term strategies, divide them into phases, and continue it till the day of the examination. In the first phase, do not pressure yourself and start building your momentum. Increase study timing in the later months.
- Whatever subject a student feels confident with should be started initially to boost the confidence level, and it will be helpful for other subjects also.
- To enhance Legal Reasoning, students should practice and keep their content limited during the exam, as it is a personalized subject. Read articles and learn theories to frame your answers interactively in limited words.
- Read newspapers, and case files and try to draw arguments for Logical Reasoning. For Quantitative Techniques, get your concepts cleared by the teachers and practice passages regularly, as it is an approachable subject.
- Do not compare your marks with other students, as it will demotivate and will build unnecessary stress. If you are a beginner, you should avoid it at any cost.
