As an examination board rather than a test for admission, HPBOSE handles registration of school candidates, sets question papers across the science, commerce, arts and vocational streams, conducts the written examinations at centres across the state's districts, evaluates answer scripts and publishes results, mark sheets and migration certificates. It also runs re-evaluation, rechecking and compartment routes for students who need them, and administers open-school and correspondence-mode examinations for candidates outside regular schooling. Colleges and universities use its Class 12 result as proof of qualification, and national and state entrance tests such as those for engineering, medical, law and central university admission accept it as the qualifying examination. Students planning higher education should read the board's date sheet alongside the separate notifications of the entrance tests they intend to write, since the two schedules are issued by different bodies and can overlap.
