Michigan English Test

The Michigan English Test (MET) is an English language proficiency test developed by Michigan Language Assessment. It assesses the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills of non-native speakers. MET scores are accepted by over 2000 institutions worldwide, including top universities like Stanford University, SUNY Albany, and Rutgers University. It is also accepted for skilled worker visas in the USA and Australia.

The MET exam fee in India is USD $185. Currently, it is offered at 2 Prometric test centers in 2 cities in India: Hyderabad and Gurgaon. At-home testing is currently unavailable in India.

The MET pattern includes 4 sections - Writing, Listening, Reading, and Speaking - and takes 155 minutes (2 hours and 35 minutes) to complete. The test tasks are easy to understand and don't require any special knowledge. The total score ranges between 0 and 80, which is an average of the sectional scores (0-80). MET scores never expire, but some recognizing universities require scores from tests taken within 2 years of application.

MET Exam Fees in India 2026

In India, the MET registration costs USD $185. This fee also covers access to test accommodations, digital score reports, and sharing your test results with unlimited institutions. Below are the fees for additional services.

Note: 

• 1 USD = INR 90.20 (As of January 14, 2026). You will make the payment in USD; your bank will automatically deduct the equivalent amount in INR at the prevailing exchange rate.

• Credit and debit cards accepted for payment: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Make sure international transaction is enabled.

MET Registration Process

Follow the steps below to understand the MET registration process.

• Go to the Prometric ProScheduler to check test availability at your chosen city (Hyderabad or Gurgaon).

• Select the sponsor as Michigan Language Assessment.

• If a test is available, create a Michigan Customer Portal account and give all the required details to complete your profile.

• After you are redirected to your profile, click on “Register for a Test”.

• Select your test type and location. (At-home testing is currently unavailable in India)

• Make the Payment.

• Check for an email from michiganassessment.org. Copy the “eligibility number” and go back to the scheduler.

• Click on “Schedule” and read the Terms & Conditions carefully.

• You will be asked to enter your eligibility number and the last 4 letters of your last name.

• Select your time zone and the date of the appointment. You will be given a list of available time slots on that day. Select your preferred time.

• Enter your personal information as asked in the form.

• Review everything and confirm your appointment.

• You will receive a confirmation email from Prometric with all the details of your test appointment.

Note: Although India has 7 Prometric Centers across 6 cities – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, the test is only offered at 2 - Hyderabad and Gurgaon centers, as mentioned in the table above.

Is there any penalty for wrong answers in the MET?

No, there is no negative marking in the MET. Therefore, you are advised to answer all the questions.

MET Exam Scoring System

Michigan Language Assessment uses a standardized scoring system for the MET, as explained below:

• The Listening and Reading sections are scored by computer.

• The Writing and Speaking sections are scored by trained raters who follow set guidelines.

• You will receive a scaled score between 0 and 80 for each section. The overall score is the average of the 4 section scores.

Instead of just a pass or fail, your results will show your skill level based on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference), with a detailed explanation of what you can do at that level. The table below gives the CEFR level corresponding to your MET scores in each section.

The MET registration can be done online from the Michigan Language Assessment portal. First, you need to check the available test dates on Prometric ProScheduler. This is very important, as you can schedule your test (select date, time, and center) only after the payment. After this, you can proceed with the registration by creating an account on the Michigan Customer Portal and following the instructions.

In this article, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of registering for the Michigan English Test.

MET Registration 2026

Follow the instructions below to understand the MET registration process:

Step 1: Check the test availability in your city from the Prometric ProScheduler. (Link Here).

Step 2: Click on “Search Availability.”

• Test Sponsor: Michigan Language Assessment
• Program: Michigan English Test (MET)
• Test: MET 4-Skill (Test Center)

Step 3: Enter the city of testing (Hyderabad or Gurgaon) and the date range in which you want to take the test. Check the test availability.

Step 4: If the test is available, you can proceed to registration. Create an account in the Michigan Customer Portal (Link Here), and log in with your credentials.

Step 5: In the dashboard, click on “Register for a Test.”

Step 6: Select the following:

• Test: MET
• Location: In Center (At-home testing is currently unavailable in India)
• Test Type: MET 4-Skill - Test Session (Corresponding test fees will automatically appear and get selected)
• Choose if you want a watermarked paper certificate. This will cost an additional USD $68.50.
• Enter if you want accommodations.

Step 7: Answer the questions that follow, like the purpose of your test, your current level of education, and your first language.

Step 8: Select if you want to share your results with organizations like universities. You can share unlimited score reports for free after release, also. But, if you select “Yes”, you will have to enter the details of the organization, like name and country.

Step 9: You may enter your address if you want; these are optional fields.

Step 10: You will be redirected to your cart. Make the payment. The payment can only be made with credit cards or debit cards. The accepted cards include Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, JCB, UnionPay, and Diners Club. Make sure international transactions are enabled.

Step 11: After payment, you will receive an email that contains an eligibility number. This number is used to schedule your test from the Prometric ProScheduler. Copy it, go back to the scheduler, and click on “Schedule.”

Step 12: Select the same test sponsor and program, and click on “Next.” Notice that, this time, you won’t see an option “Test Type”. This is because, you have already registered for the test.

Step 13: Read the ID, rescheduling, cancellation, and data sharing policies carefully and acknowledge your consent.

Step 15: Enter the eligibility number and the first 4 characters of your last name. Click on “Next.”

Step 16: Confirm your time zone.

Step 17: Choose your preferred date range. A list of available test dates within the range will be displayed. Click on “Reserve Test Time.”

Step 18: Enter your personal details. The name you enter here must exactly match that in your passport.

Step 19: Review your appointment details and click on “Complete Appointment.”

Step 20: You will receive an email from Prometric confirming your test appointment and providing all the details of your booking.

The Michigan English Test pattern is divided into 4 sections: Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening. The total number of questions is 107, and the duration of the test is 155 minutes (2 hours 35 minutes).

The MET writing tasks measure your writing at the sentence, paragraph, and essay levels. How Are MET Scores Calculated?

• Most universities abroad (especially in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Europe) require B2 (53+) or C1 (64+) overall, often with minimums per section (e.g., no skill below B1 or B2).
• Check specific institutions, as many accept MET as equivalent to IELTS bands (5.5-8.0) or TOEFL iBT (72-110).

The MET scores are typically released within 5 business days. You can access the report from the Michigan Language Assessment portal. Here’s what is included in your MET score report:

• Scaled scores (0-80) for each section.

MET Score Validity

The MET scores do not have an official validity period. The scores never expire, but most universities accept English test scores that are no more than 2 years old. You must check the university as well as the specific program requirements before registering for MET or applying to the university itself.

MET Retake Policy 2026

If you are not satisfied with your MET scores, you can retake any of the individual sections, rather than taking the entire exam again. This can save you a lot of time and money. Below is the MET retaking policy 2026:

• You can only retake the Reading, Writing, and Listening sections. Retaking the Speaking section is not allowed.
• The retake request must be made within 3 days of receiving the results.
• The retake must be completed within 28 days of receiving the results.
• The MET fees for the Reading and Listening sections are USD $65 each, and that for the Writing section is USD $67.

• Only allowed for the Speaking and Writing sections.
• Fee: USD $44 for each section.
