UPES DAT Eligibility Criteria 2024
The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) conducts the Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for admission to its undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) design programs. Eligibility standards are defined separately for each course. The details are provided below.
UPES DAT is held to assess the design aptitude of candidates. Admission through this exam is offered for the following courses:
- Master of Design (M.Des) Transportation Design
- Master of Design (M.Des) Industrial Design
- Bachelor of Design (B.Des) with specialization in Product Design/Transportation Design
- Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with specialization in Digital Arts
Note: Candidates with a valid CEED Score are exempted from appearing for the M.Des entrance examination.
B.Des Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for B.Des is based on academic qualification and age. The academic requirements differ based on the admission pathway chosen.
Academic Qualification
Exam pathway: Candidates must have a minimum of fifty percent (50%) marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level (10th and 12th). These candidates must appear for the UPES DAT online entrance test, followed by a portfolio presentation and interview.
Non-Exam pathway: Admission is granted through Board merit or JEE Main/UCEED scores.
- Board Merit: Minimum sixty-five percent (65%) marks in X and XII standard from any stream. Candidates do not appear for the entrance test but directly present their portfolio followed by an interview.
- JEE MAIN/UCEED: Minimum fifty percent (50%) marks in X and XII standard with valid JEE MAIN/UCEED scores. Candidates appear for an interview followed by a portfolio presentation.
Age Criteria
Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 1, 1995 are eligible to apply. The date of birth recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate is considered authentic.
BFA Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for BFA is based on academic qualification and age criteria.
Academic Qualification
- Minimum of fifty percent (50%) marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level (X and XII standard).
- Candidates from any stream are eligible.
- Eligible candidates must appear for the UPES DAT online entrance test, followed by a portfolio presentation and interview.

M.Des Eligibility Criteria (Transportation/Industrial)
Eligibility for M.Des is based on academic qualification.
Academic Eligibility
- Minimum of fifty percent (50%) marks at Higher and Senior Secondary level (X and XII standard).
- B.Tech/B.E in any discipline, B.Arch, BFA (4 years), B.Des, or 3 years B.Sc in design plus one year of foundation/Applied Arts with minimum fifty percent (50%) marks.
Eligible candidates must appear for the UPES DAT online entrance test, followed by a portfolio presentation and interview. Candidates with valid CEED 2015/16 scores are exempted from the UPES DAT exam.
UPES DAT Reservation 2024
Reservation is applicable for residents of Uttarakhand. The rules for seat allocation under this category are listed below.
- Fifteen percent (15%) of seats in all programs are reserved for residents of Uttarakhand, subject to production of the Sthai Niwas Praman Patra (Permanent Residence Certificate) issued by the competent authority of the state.
- Seats under this category are allotted solely on merit basis or positions secured under this category.
- Candidates must declare their intent to opt under this category at the time of applying for admission.
- Candidature stands cancelled if the candidate fails to produce the Sthai Niwas Praman Patra (in original) on the day of admission.
- If seats under this category remain vacant by a stipulated date, they are treated as unreserved.
UPES DAT Eligibility Criteria for International Applicants
International applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria for UPES DAT 2024. The requirements are listed below.
- Candidates must hold a valid passport and visa for the duration of the course.
- Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen program, as mentioned above.
- Candidates from non-English speaking countries must satisfy UPES that they have adequate English proficiency for their chosen program. If required, such candidates may need to provide an undertaking to undergo English language training for a specific period before classes begin. Qualifying TOEFL/IELTS or equivalent may not be mandatory but is strongly advised.
- For undergraduate admission, UPES must be satisfied that candidates have obtained a higher school secondary certificate with the minimum percentage of marks as prescribed above. Candidates must also have taken the requisite courses necessary to meet the eligibility criteria.
- For post-graduate programs, the equivalent of the undergraduate degree earned in the candidate's country must be obtained from the AIU. In certain cases, candidates may be required to visit the AIU in this regard.
