Accommodation
Finding a new place to live can be difficult, especially when you are moving to abroad for the first time. Every year, 20,000 students, of which 10,000 international students, start their studies in Groningen. Almost all of these students are looking for a place to live during this period in time. Please take into account that you may need to rely on alternative accommodation such as student hotels and hostels. We therefore advise you to start looking for student accommodation as soon as you are certain you are going to study in Groningen, ideally starting 5 months in advance.
Student housing in the Netherlands is regulated differently from most other countries. In fact, students have to arrange accommodation themselves. Finding student housing in Groningen, one of the nicest student cities in the Netherlands, can be difficult. Many students are looking for housing at the same time and the current housing shortage can be a disadvantage in your search. That is why it is important that you actively look for a room, so that you have housing on time.
Taking your chances and coming to Groningen without a place to stay? Please take into account that you will be depending on stays in alternative accommodation such as hotels en hostels. Not only will this make your stay very expensive, but it will also create stress and uncertainty.
SSH Groningen is a non-profit housing corporation and acts as an intermediary in finding temporary and fully furnished accommodation for bachelor/master and exchange students. Hanze UAS reserves rooms for students at SSH, but the number of rooms available is limited. Each year, approximately 25% of our incoming students can make a reservation at SSH. So, if you wish to rent your room through SSH, register and make your reservation for Short Stay on time.
SSH registration for the Autumn semester starts on Wednesday 8 April 2026 10 a.m. You can make a reservation from: Thursday 7 May 2026 10 a.m. for Bachelor and Master students. Monday 11 May 2026 10 a.m. for exchange students. For the Proxima building you can make a reservation from Thursday 30 April 2026 10 a.m.
SSH has several international student houses with furnished rooms, most of them with shared facilities. There is a (Dutch) residence assistant in each SSH housing facility. The residence assistant will welcome you in the building when you arrive. You can rent a room in an international student house for a maximum period of 12 months. After this period, you have to find another room yourself.
If you are going to study at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences next year, and you have registered at SSH, we’d like to remind you that we still have some rooms available in Proxima, our new student building at the Zernike Campus!
Make sure you follow the correct procedure to ensure you are registered. Before you can apply for a room you need to be registered with SSH. The housing officer will approve your registration if you have enrolled yourself in the system for student administration. Please note that you do not have to fill out your student number when registering at SHH; you can leave this field open (unless you already know your student number). The Housing Manager of Hanze UAS will be asked to confirm that you are a new student, and that you are either accepted or provisionally accepted. This might take a few days. After this confirmation, you will be able to book a room.
