Established in 1844, the University at Albany is an open research university. In 1905, the university decided to reorganize the academic structure, and later on, it became the first institute of higher education in New York City to offer a bachelor's degree. In 1913, the university started offering a master's degree.

The first class at the university began in the year of establishment with two faculty members and 29 students. SUNY was developed in 1948. The university granted a doctoral degree program in 1962.
