University of South Dakota History
In the year 1862, the first Legislature of the Dakota Territory had established the first postsecondary institution and classes were held 20 years later. 69 students had been enrolled at the university by the year 1883 and the number grew to 500 in the year 1889. The School of Law at South Dakota University had started offering classes in 1901; School of Medicine in 1907; the School of Business in 1927 and the College of Fine Arts in 1931.
