Established by John Boynton and Ichabod Washburn, WPI Institute is one of the nation's first Engineering and Technology universities. Bayton, a self-made tinware manufacturer contributed USD 100,000, to build a technical school, which later turned out to be Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
