What is JEE Advanced?

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced is a national-level entrance examination conducted for students seeking admission to IITs in India.

  • The exam will be conducted in two mandatory papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2 on the same day in 2 shifts.
  • Both papers will be conducted in CBT mode, consisting of 17 questions in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics respectively.

Ques. If I passed Class 12 in 2025, am I eligible for JEE Advanced 2026 even if I had failed or dropped a year?

Ans. Yes, but only under some circumstances; it depends on the official eligibility rules for JEE Advanced.

  • If you have appeared for Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 then you can apply for JEE Advanced 2026 even if you have not cleared your previous attempt or taken a year drop.
  • Only those candidates who have appeared in 2024 or before are not eligible for JEE Advanced.

Ques. If I reappear only in some subjects of Class 12, can I still use the top 20 percentile criterion?

Ans. No, if you reappear in only some subjects in Class 12 (for improvement), you will not be able to qualify for the top 20 percentile.

Ans. For the JEE Advanced 2026 registration, there are some important documents required:

  • Primary Document: You must upload your 2025 improvement exam marksheet during the JEE Advanced 2026 registration.
  • Supporting Documents: Along with the Class 12 marksheet 2025, you should upload your 2024 original Class 12 Marksheet.

Application Process

The JEE Advanced 2026 application form will be released by IIT Roorkee on  April 23, 2026, at 10 AM, for Indian nationals. The JEE Advanced registration for foreign nationals (OCI/PIO) will begin on April 6, 2026, on the official website. The last date of registration for both Indian and Foreign nationals is May 2, 2026, and the last date for the application fee payment is May 4, 2026.

The JEE Advanced registration involves application form filing, uploading of required documents and payment of the application fee. Candidates also have to choose eight exam cities according to their preference. The final exam centre will be listed on the JEE Advanced 2026 admit card.

JEE Advanced registration fees are INR 1600 for female (all categories), SC, ST and PwD candidates; for all the other candidates, the JEE Advanced application fee is INR 3200.

To be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced 2026 exam, the candidates should be in the top 2.5 lakh students qualifying the JEE Main 2026 exam. The candidate cannot attempt JEE Advanced more than two times in two years.

Candidates registering for the JEE Advanced 2026 exam must be born on or after October 1, 2001. For reserved categories there is a five year relaxation, so they must be born on or after October 1, 1996.

The candidates who have been admitted to any IIT through JoSAA 2024 and their admission was later cancelled by the IIT after joining are not eligible to register for JEE Advanced 2026.

Category-Wise Reservation in JEE Advanced 2026

The Government of India offers a reservation policy to various categories to ensure equal opportunities. JEE Advanced 2026 exam follows these policies and offers reserved seats to SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD category candidates. Foreign Nationals are not eligible to avail the reservation benefits.

GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL category candidates must have their category certificates issued on or after April 1, 2026.

A 5% horizontal reservation is applicable for PwD candidates across all categories, and one seat is reserved in every institute for PwD candidates with Dyslexia.

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility for Foreign Nationals 

The foreign national students are not required to appear for the JEE Main 2026 in order to apply for the JEE Advanced 2026 exam. The foreign national students are not included in the 2.5 lakh students qualifying for JEE Advanced through JEE Main.

If they qualify, the seats allotted to foreign nationals are supernumerary with a limit of 10% of the total number of seats in every course. They are not eligible for the reserved seats under the EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD.

The Physics section is dominated by Heat & Thermodynamics with a weightage of around 12-14%, followed by Electrostatics.

The JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled for May 17, 2026. Candidates can start their preparation, as the exam is just around 3 months away.

  • JEE Advanced differs from JEE Main, as it focuses on concepts and their applications, unlike JEE Main.

Ques. Is the syllabus the same for both Paper 1 and Paper 2?

Ans. Yes, the syllabus is similar for both papers. Both papers have three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. However, the questions slightly differ in style, difficulty and arrangement.

Ques. Does the syllabus match exactly with NCERT Class 11 and 12?

Ans. Mostly Yes, the syllabus overlaps 80-90% with the NCERTs, but in JEE Advanced, the concepts are more in-depth and application-based.

For example, some topics, such as qualitative probability density plots in Atomic Structure, floor/ceiling functions in Math,s are emphasized more conceptually than in boards.

How is JEE Advanced Cutoff Calculated?

The JEE Advanced cutoff is divided into two parts, i.e, qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff. The qualifying cutoff is calculated to determine whether the candidate is eligible for inclusion in the rank list or not.

The qualifying cutoff is calculated based on the total marks scored in the JEE Main exam, the performance of all the candidates is compared to decide a minimum qualifying cutoff for JEE Advanced. Each reserved category has a separate cutoff and minimum marks in each subject.

  • For General (CRL): Around 10% per subject and 30–32% overall.
  • For GEN-EWS / OBC-NCL: Around 9% per subject and 27–29% overall.
  • For SC / ST / PwD: Around 5% per subject and 15–17% overall.

The JEE Advanced admission cutoff refers to the closing rank required for admission to an IIT.

  • It is declared by JoSAA after each round of counselling.
  • The cutoff is calculated based on the seat allotment data and depends on the last rank at which the seat is allotted in a branch of the IIT.

Factors Influencing JEE Advanced Cutoff 2026

The JEE Advanced cutoff changes every year as it depends on various factors such as exam difficulty level, number of candidates appearing, seats availability etc.

The various factors influencing JEE Advanced cutoff are given below:

  • Difficulty Level: It is the most important factor in determining the cutoff as the difficulty of the paper increases the cutoff decreases or vice versa.
  • Number of candidates: The more number of candidates appearing for the exam, the more will be the competition. Higher competition increases the cutoff.
  • Seat Availability: When the available seats increases, it will reduce the cutoff slightly.
  • Students Performance: If more number of students perform better or score high then the cutoff will also rises.
  • Reservation: There will be different cutoff for different sections of the society due to reservation.
  • Previous year cutoff trends: The authorities try to maintain stability in the qualifying cutoffs except if there is sudden change in the exam difficulty.

The JEE Advanced 2025 exam has two mandatory papers - Paper 1 and Paper 2, each for 3 hours and including subjects like, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each paper is divided into 4 sections, with a total of 183 marks per paper, making a total of 366 marks.

Marking Scheme Breakdown

JEE Advanced Result 2025: Tie Breaker Policy

If two or more candidates score the same marks in JEE Advanced 2024, then the following tie-breaking rule is going to be followed to determine the ranks of the candidates:

  • In case of a tie, candidates having higher positive marks in JEE Advanced result 2025 are going to be awarded a higher rank.
  • If a tie still persists, candidates having more marks in Mathematics will be given a higher rank.
  • If a tie still persists, candidates with more marks in Physics will be given a higher rank.
  • If the tie is not resolved yet, candidates will be given the same JEE Advanced rank.

JEE Advanced JoSAA Counselling

The JEE Advanced JoSAA 2025 counselling is a centeralised process for the admission into 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 46 Other-GFTIs for the academic year 2025–26. The JoSAA counselling is scheduled to start from 3 June 2025 after the declaration of JEE Advanced Result 2025.

JEE Advanced JoSAA Counselling Process

  • Registration & Choice Filling: The candidates have to register on the official JoSAA website and submit their institute and course preferences.
    • Registration Fee: ₹5,000 (₹2,000 for SC, ST, PwD, and female candidates)
    • Eligibility: The candidates should have a valid JEE Advanced 2025 rank in order to undergo JoSAA counselling.
    • Documents Required: JEE Advanced 2025 scorecard, mark sheets of class 10 and 12, category certificates (if any), photo ID, and other verification documents.
  • Mock Allotments: The candidates would be given two mock allotments to get an idea of their position and make any required changes in their preferences.
  • Seat Allotment Rounds: There will be six rounds of seat allotment, followed by online reporting, fee payment, document uploading, and responding to queries (if any).
  • Final Admission: Once all the rounds are over, candidates will have to report to the allocated institute for final admission processes.
