Ques. How many total marks are in VITEEE?
VITEEE 2026 Total Marks
The VITEEE 2026 exam carries a total of 500 marks. The paper has 125 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and each question is worth 4 marks.
For every correct answer, you get +4 marks, and for each wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted. No marks are added or deducted for questions you skip.
| Details | VITEEE 2026 Marking |
|---|---|
| Total Questions | 125 |
| Marks per Question | 4 |
| Total Marks | 500 |
| Marks for Correct Answer | +4 |
| Marks Deducted for Wrong Answer | −1 |
| Marks for Unattempted Question | 0 |
VITEEE 2026 Negative Marking
For VITEEE 2026, negative marking has been reintroduced after two years. This means your accuracy now matters as much as the number of questions you attempt.
- You get +4 marks for every correct answer.
- You lose 1 mark for every wrong answer.
- No marks are given or deducted for unattempted questions.
So, out of 125 questions, the total score will be 500 marks. This new system encourages students to focus on accuracy and smart attempts instead of random guessing.
VITEEE Marking Scheme
The VITEEE 2026 marking scheme follows a new pattern that rewards accuracy and penalizes incorrect attempts. You will face 125 questions in total, and the paper carries 500 marks overall.
Here is how the marking works:
- +4 marks for every correct answer
- −1 mark for every wrong answer
- 0 marks for questions not attempted
This change makes the exam more competitive, as guessing can now reduce your total score.
VITEEE Eligibility Criteria
VITEEE does not have a 75% eligibility criterion. Instead, a minimum of 60% aggregate is needed by general category students in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in the 12th standard.
For SC/ST candidates and the candidates from Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and the Northeastern states, the minimum percentage needed is 50%.
VITEEE vs JEE Main
The VITEEE exam is not tougher than the JEE Main. According to most sources, VITEEE is comparatively much easier as students are asked more direct and conceptual questions in the exam.
Furthermore, there is no negative marking in the exam, which reduces its complexity for students. There is an emphasis on speed as well as accuracy in the exam.
VITEEE Safe Rank
A safe rank for VITEEE mainly depends on the desired campus of students and their specialisation. However, generally a rank under 8000 is regarded to be good for top branches at the Vellore campus.
The ranks around 20000 to 30000 are considered safe for branches at the Chennai campus. The ranks up to 45000 or even higher may be acceptable for VIT-AP/Bhopal and less popular branches.
VIT Admission Process
The Vellore Institute of Technology basically considers scores from its own entrance exam, which is the VITEEE. It does not accept JEE Main scores for the purpose of admission to candidates in its undergraduate engineering programs.
You need to remember that the admission process of VIT is centred around the VITEEE exam.
JEE Main 97th Percentile
In JEE Mains, a 97th percentile is generally considered to be a good score for candidates. This is because this score can place you in the top 3% of test-takers.
Moreover, this score opens doors to admission in diverse, well-regarded engineering colleges. However, you need to bear in mind that whether it is good enough or not depends on the candidate's specific goals, the chosen branch, or the particular college.
VITEEE Exam Pattern
The VITEEE exam has 125 questions for a total of 500 marks. Each question carries 4 marks.
| Section | Number of Questions | Marks per Question | Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 35 | 4 | 140 |
| Chemistry | 35 | 4 | 140 |

| Aptitude | 10 | 4 | 40 |
| English | 5 | 4 | 20 |
| Total | 125 | 500 | |
Focus on accuracy and time management, as each wrong answer can lower your rank. It is better to attempt only the questions you are confident about instead of guessing all 125.
VITEEE Marking Scheme
There is no negative marking for incorrect answers in VITEEE. Each correct answer earns 1 mark.
| Section | Number of Questions | Marks per Question | Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
