Overview

The test is computer based and made up of sections that assess quantitative ability, verbal ability and, in some versions, logical reasoning, with a fixed time limit for each section so that a candidate cannot move back and forth freely between them. Some versions include short answer questions in the quantitative section in addition to multiple choice questions, and negative marking usually applies to the multiple choice parts. Clearing the written test alone does not complete admission. Shortlisted candidates go through a further selection stage, which normally includes a written ability test and a personal interview, and the final merit list combines the entrance score, the later rounds and past academic record in the proportions announced by the institute. The programmes it feeds are residential undergraduate degrees at institutes of management, with the later years covering management coursework. The section names, question counts and weightages are declared in the admission bulletin of the conducting institute each year.
