GMAT Score Range and Sections
GMAT scores are reported on a scale of 205-805. The report also includes section-wise scores and percentiles.
The total score is based on performance in 3 scored sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Each section is reported on a 60-90 scale.
| Section | Score Range | Score Interval | Standard Error of Measurement* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Reasoning | 60-90 | 1 | 3 points |
| Verbal Reasoning | 60-90 | 1 | 3 points |
| Data Insights | 60-90 | 1 | 3 points |
| Overall | 205-805 | 10 | 30-40 points |
All total score values end in a 5. GMAC provides percentile rankings that indicate the percentage of test takers a candidate has scored higher than.
Standard Error of Measurement
The Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) shows how much a GMAT score can naturally vary due to small differences in test conditions or question selection.
- Your score is your reported number, but SEM tells you your true ability likely falls within a range around it.
- Example: If you score 655 and the SEM is 30 points, your actual ability probably lies between 625 and 685.
- Small score differences (like 655 vs 665) are not significant, because they may be within this range.
- SEM helps students understand that minor score changes are normal, while larger improvements reflect real progress.
SEM does not change your score, but it helps you and admissions committees interpret it more accurately.
How GMAT Scores Are Calculated
GMAT scores are calculated using a computer-adaptive system. The test is adaptive, meaning questions get harder with correct answers and easier with wrong answers.
- Section performance matters most. For each section, the score is not just based on how many answers are correct.
- The computer uses an algorithm that looks at the number of correct answers and how difficult those questions were.
- Raw answers are turned into a scaled section score from 60 to 90.
- The 3 section scores are combined with equal weight, one-third each.
- This gives the final Total Score from 205 to 805.
- There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so candidates are advised to answer every question.

GMAT Percentile Ranking 2026
Section percentiles work in a similar way. For example, a Quant score of 85 might be at the 90th percentile. Business schools give weight to percentiles because they provide context for a score.
Raw scores look lower in the Focus Edition, but a 645 (89th percentile) is competitive. This score is equivalent to a 700 on the old test. Aim for 645+ for top B-schools abroad like Harvard, Stanford, or INSEAD.
Reddit Insights: Indian students often do well in quant. They may need to focus on verbal and data insights to get balanced scores.
