GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Sample Papers - Why Recent Papers Matter Most
GATE releases its previous years' question papers, making them a useful resource for preparation. However, Environmental Science and Engineering is a relatively new GATE paper with fewer past question papers than other branches. That makes practising recent sample papers even more important for understanding the latest exam pattern and topic-wise weightage.
- NAT questions carry significant weight: Many 2-mark questions are Numerical Answer Type (NAT), especially from Water and Wastewater Treatment, Reaction Kinetics, and Air Pollution. Since NAT questions do not have negative marking, it is worth attempting all of them.
- Water and Wastewater topics are highly important: Questions on water supply, water treatment, wastewater treatment, and treatment unit design appear regularly in the exam. Topics such as sedimentation tanks, filtration, and aeration systems often require numerical calculations, making regular practice essential.
- All major subjects remain part of the syllabus: The paper includes Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Microbiology, Water Resources, Water and Wastewater Treatment, Air and Noise Pollution, Solid Waste Management, Environmental Management, and Environmental Laws. While these topics appear every year, their weightage changes. Solving multiple GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Sample Papers 2027 helps you understand these trends and prepare more effectively.
GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Chapter Wise Weightage - High Scoring Topics to Focus in Sample Papers
The official ES syllabus groups the subject into eight large branches. The 46 core questions spread across them fairly evenly, with the water, wastewater and air blocks carrying the most calculation. The table below shows how our sample papers distribute them.
| Branch | Questions | Difficulty | What to Watch For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology | 6 | Moderate | Water quality parameters, BOD and COD, DO sag and the oxygen demand equations, nutrient cycles and microbial growth. Formula driven, so clean unit handling on BOD rate constants banks quick marks. |
| Water Resources and Environmental Hydraulics | 6 | Moderate | Hydrologic cycle, rainfall and runoff, well hydraulics, open channel and pipe flow for supply mains. Mixed theory and numericals, so watch the sign and datum conventions in head loss problems. |
| Water Supply and Water Treatment | 6 | Moderate to Hard | Demand estimation, coagulation and flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection and chlorine demand. Design heavy with overflow rate and detention time formulas, so a slipped unit sinks the whole answer. |
| Wastewater Treatment and Disposal | 6 | Moderate to Hard | Sewage characteristics, primary and secondary treatment, activated sludge, trickling filters and sludge handling. A frequent NAT source through F/M ratio, MLSS and efficiency sizing, so set the mass balance carefully. |
| Air Pollution and Control | 6 | Moderate to Hard | Pollutant sources and effects, Gaussian plume dispersion, stack height, settling chambers, cyclones, ESPs and scrubbers. Dispersion numericals reward a clean plume setup and correct stability class. |
| Noise Pollution and Environmental Monitoring | 4 | Moderate | Sound pressure and decibel addition, equivalent noise level, standards and control, plus sampling and monitoring methods. Small block, so log based decibel arithmetic is where careful candidates bank the marks. |
| Solid and Hazardous Waste Management | 6 | Moderate | Generation and composition, collection and transport, landfills, composting, incineration and hazardous waste rules. Part conceptual and part numerical on landfill gas and volume, so know the standards as well as the sums. |
| Environmental Management, Sustainability and Climate | 6 | Moderate | Environmental impact assessment, standards and legislation, life cycle thinking, climate change and sustainable development. Largely fact based, so definitions and Indian statutory limits are the fast marks here. |
Note: Do not let Noise Pollution and Environmental Management slide just because they look light or theoretical. Together they are 10 questions and often more than 15 marks, the content is standard and memorable, and they need far less preparation time per mark than the water and air design blocks. In a GATE Environmental Science and Engineering sample paper these are the branches where careful candidates finish fast and bank certain marks.
GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Sample Paper Video Solutions 2027 - Watch Before You Start Solving
ES core questions look routine and still cost people marks, usually through a wrong unit in a treatment plant sizing, a missed conversion in an air dispersion problem, or the wrong formula picked for BOD versus oxygen demand. Watching a set solved shows you where the time and the errors actually go.
The walkthrough below works through GATE Environmental Science previous year questions across the main branches. Watch it once, then start on Sample Paper 1 and see how many of the same patterns you recognise.

How to Use GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Sample Papers to Clear in First Attempt
The ES core rewards two things, breadth and clean numerical work. Your preparation should push you across all eight branches while cutting the small slips that cost you sure marks.
- Time every paper at 128 minutes. That is the pace the ES core earns inside the full 180. If you routinely take 160, you are borrowing the time General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics will need on exam day.
- Attempt every NAT. A large part of the 2 mark load is Numerical Answer Type with no negative marking, so a solved value or even a careful estimate is always better than a blank.
- Log why you got it wrong, not just what. Wrong unit in a treatment sizing, missed conversion in a plume calculation, or genuinely did not know the standard. Those three need three different fixes.
- Balance your revision by branch. A steady 60 percent can hide the fact that every miss is Air Pollution or Wastewater Treatment. Track score per branch, not just the total.
- Do not skip the 1 mark questions. Twenty of them carry 20 marks between them and take the least time per mark in the paper.
- Rework each paper's water and wastewater sections. Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment together are 12 questions and the heaviest calculation load, so a second pass there moves your score more than anywhere else.
GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Negative Marking and Attempt Strategy
GATE's marking scheme is more forgiving than most students assume, but only if you know which question type you are looking at. Getting this wrong costs marks that nothing else will win back.
- Only MCQs are penalised. The deduction is one third of the marks allotted, so a wrong 1 mark MCQ costs 0.33 and a wrong 2 mark MCQ costs 0.67.
- Never leave a NAT blank. Numerical Answer Type questions carry no negative marking, and they make up a big share of the ES core in water treatment, wastewater and air pollution. An unsure value is free, and a blank is a guaranteed zero.
- MSQ needs all or nothing. Multiple Select Questions carry no penalty either, but partial ticks earn nothing. Only mark the options you are sure of, and remember there may be just one.
- On MCQs, eliminate before you guess. A blind guess across four options is a losing trade at one third negative. Once two options are gone, on a 2 mark treatment or air pollution MCQ, it turns clearly in your favour.
GATE Environmental Science and Engineering 4 Week Preparation Plan Using Sample Papers

- Week 2: Work through Water Supply and Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment and Disposal, especially coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, plus activated sludge and trickling filters. Solve Sample Papers 3, 4 and 5.
- Week 3: Cover Air Pollution and Control, Noise Pollution and Environmental Monitoring, and Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, including plume dispersion and control devices, decibel arithmetic, and landfills and composting. Solve Sample Papers 6, 7 and 8.
- Week 4: Revise Environmental Management, Sustainability and Climate with impact assessment, legislation and sustainable development, then solve Sample Papers 9 and 10 back to back to check your pace holds across all eight branches. Revise only your error log and keep the last 2 days light, with no new topics.
FAQs on GATE Environmental Science and Engineering Sample Papers 2027
Ques. How many questions and marks does the GATE Environmental Science and Engineering core carry in these sample papers?
Ans.Each GATE Environmental Science and Engineering sample paper carries 46 questions worth 72 marks, made up of 20 questions of 1 mark and 26 questions of 2 marks. This is the Environmental Science and Engineering core only, so it leaves out General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics, which are separate parts. In the real exam the full paper is 65 questions and 100 marks, with General Aptitude taking 15 marks.
Ques.Is there negative marking in the GATE Environmental Science and Engineering paper?
Ans.Only on MCQs, and the deduction is one third of the marks allotted to that question. So a wrong 1 mark MCQ costs you 0.33 and a wrong 2 mark MCQ costs 0.67. Multiple Select Questions and Numerical Answer Type questions carry no negative marking at all, which matters a lot in Environmental Science and Engineering because so much of the core is NAT across water treatment, wastewater and air pollution. Never leave a NAT question blank.
Ques. How much time should I spend on the Environmental Science and Engineering core in the real exam?
Ans.Budget about 128 minutes for the 46 core questions. The paper gives 180 minutes for 65 questions, which is roughly 2.77 minutes per question, so 46 ES core questions earn about 128 minutes. That leaves the remaining time for General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics. Practising a full GATE Environmental Science and Engineering sample paper at this pace is the best way to keep that balance under real pressure.
Ques.Which branches carry the most weight in the GATE Environmental Science and Engineering paper?
Ans.The paper is spread fairly evenly, but Water Supply and Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment and Disposal, and Air Pollution and Control carry the heaviest calculation load, each around 6 questions in our papers. Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology, Water Resources, Solid and Hazardous Waste and Environmental Management follow closely, with Noise Pollution and Environmental Monitoring the lightest block. Our sample papers spread the 46 questions across all eight so you are never blindsided by a branch you skipped.
Ques.Do these sample papers include General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics?
Ans.No. These GATE Environmental Science and Engineering sample papers cover only the Environmental Science and Engineering technical core of 46 questions and 72 marks. General Aptitude is a shared part worth 15 marks and Engineering Mathematics is a separate part worth about 13 marks in the full paper, and both are provided separately, so you can drill the ES core on its own without diluting your practice.
Ques. Are these GATE Environmental Science and Engineering sample papers the same as previous year papers?
Ans.No. GATE does publish its past papers, and you should solve those too. These are original questions written to the current pattern, with 46 core questions in 128 minutes and the 20 plus 26 mark split, so you get fresh practice once you have exhausted the official sets. They also weight NAT questions, treatment design and air pollution the way recent ES papers do, which the small stock of past papers cannot cover on its own.
