How the Cutoff Works

The VITMEE cutoff 2026 is the minimum score and closing rank needed for an M.Tech seat at VIT. It is set during online counselling, not before it. Rank in the merit list decides which branch and campus can be picked.

VIT runs this exam for M.Tech admission across Vellore, Chennai, AP, and Bhopal. The paper has 100 questions for 100 marks, with no negative marking. A higher score gives a better rank and a wider choice of branches.

Two terms need to be understood. The qualifying score is the basic mark needed to enter counselling. The admission cutoff is the closing score of the last student who got a seat in a branch. The admission cutoff is always higher than the qualifying score.

Vellore CSE rose by 10 marks across five years. Chennai CSE rose by 7 marks in the same period. The AP and Bhopal closing score rose by 8 marks, from 34 to 42. The trend points to a small rise again in 2026 for CSE branches.

How Much Can the Cutoff Change Each Year?

For CSE, the closing score usually shifts by 2 to 3 marks each year. Other branches move even less. A sudden jump only happens if the paper is easy or applications rise sharply.

VITMEE 2026 Cutoff: Counselling Process

The VITMEE cutoff takes shape during counselling. VIT runs the process online for all four campuses together. It started on May 20, 2026. Here is how each step decides your seat.

  • Merit list: VIT prepares a rank list from your VITMEE score.
  • Registration: Shortlisted students get an SMS and register on the counselling portal.
  • Choice filling: You list your preferred branch, campus, and category in order.
  • Seat allotment: The portal allots a seat based on your rank and choices.
  • Fee payment: You pay the advance fee to confirm and lock your allotted seat.
  • Reporting: You report to the campus with your documents for admission.

VIT may hold more than one round if seats stay open. Each round has its own closing score. You should fill all possible choices to improve your chance of a seat.

VITMEE 2026 Cutoff: Marks vs Rank

Your VITMEE marks decide your rank, and your rank decides your branch. A small change in marks can move your rank a lot near the top. The table below links expected scores to ranks and branch outlook.

Score Range (out of 100) Expected Rank Range Branch Outlook
60 – 70 Under 300 Core CSE and AI at Vellore
50 – 60 300 – 1,500 CSE specialisations and Chennai CSE

30 – 40 4,000 – 9,000 Mechanical, Civil, and Biotech branches
Below 30 Above 9,000 Limited options, mostly spot rounds

A jump from 50 to 60 marks can lift your rank sharply. It can move you from around 1,500 to under 300. That opens up core CSE at Vellore.

Expected VITMEE 2026 Cutoff: Safe Score

A safe score is the mark that almost guarantees your target branch. Aiming above the closing score keeps you safe across rounds. The table below gives safe scores for popular branches, based on counselling trends.

Target Branch and Campus Expected Safe Score
CSE at VIT Vellore 65 and above
CSE at VIT Chennai 52 and above
CSE specialisations at Vellore 58 and above
CSE at VIT AP or Bhopal 44 and above
Core engineering branches 40 and above

You should aim about 3 to 5 marks above the closing score for your branch. This buffer protects you if the cutoff rises a little this year. It also helps you hold your seat in early counselling rounds.

What is a Good Score in VITMEE 2026?

A score of 55 marks and above is a good VITMEE score. It puts you in range for CSE specialisations at Vellore and Chennai. A score of 65 and above is excellent and secures core CSE at Vellore.

For all postgraduate programs (M.Tech, MCA, M.Des, and M.Sc), the following order of precedence is typically followed:

  1. Higher Score in Technical/Core Subject: The candidate who achieves a higher score in the 80 questions dedicated to their specific technical or core subject (e.g., CS, Civil Engineering, etc.) is given a higher rank.
  2. Higher Score in English Communication: If the score is still tied, then whoever scored higher in the English Communication section will get the better rank.
  3. Academic Consistency: If still tied after the first two steps, VIT will check past grades. They will look at the overall percentage in the UG degree and the marks from 10th and 12th grade to decide the rank.
  4. Age Criteria: As a final tie-breaker, the date of birth is often considered, where the older candidate is assigned the higher rank.
