GSMC PGD FAQs

Ques. Do GSMC PGD students receive a monthly stipend the way MD/MS residents do?

Ans. No. PGD residents at GSMC do not receive the monthly stipend (₹65,000+) that government MD/MS residents receive. PGD is treated differently from degree-level residency under DMER Maharashtra norms. Students are responsible for their own living expenses, and the total programme fee of ₹1,40,000 to ₹2,96,000 is payable without a stipend offset. No mandatory bond applies unless specifically notified by DMER for that year.

Ques. Can I upgrade from a GSMC PGD to an MD/MS later without redoing NEET PG?

Ans. There is no direct upgrade path from a PGD to MD/MS at GSMC. To pursue an MD/MS, you must re-appear in NEET PG and qualify through fresh counselling. However, the clinical training and experience gained during a GSMC PGD is a strong foundation for NEET PG preparation and for future MD applications. Some universities allow credit recognition for PGD training, but this varies and should be confirmed with the admitting institution.

Ques. What NEET PG rank would typically be needed for clinical PGD seats at GSMC?

Ans. GSMC PGD clinical seats (Anaesthesia, OBG, Ophthalmology, Dermatology) are competitive given the college’s reputation and Mumbai location. In Maharashtra state quota, clinical PGD seats at premier government colleges have historically been allotted to candidates in the top 10,000-20,000 NEET PG rank range, with Dermatology and OBG being more competitive. Para-clinical and preclinical PGDs (Diabetology, MLT) tend to have relatively higher cutoffs. Refer to DMER Maharashtra previous-year allotment lists for exact figures.

Ques. Are GSMC PGD seats available for candidates from outside Maharashtra?

Ans. Yes. 50% of GSMC government PGD seats are filled through the All India Quota (AIQ) by MCC counselling, open to candidates from any state based on NEET PG merit. The remaining 50% are Maharashtra state-quota seats filled through DMER counselling, restricted to Maharashtra domicile holders. Out-of-state candidates should register with MCC for the AIQ round.

Ques. Does a PGD from GSMC allow independent specialist practice in that specialty?

Ans. A GSMC PGD is an NMC-recognized postgraduate qualification in the relevant specialty. However, for full specialist recognition and appointments in many hospitals and government services, an MD/MS degree is typically preferred. PGD holders can practice in their specialty and are eligible for MMC registration as a postgraduate-qualified doctor, but may face limitations in certain institutional faculty appointments that require a degree (MD/MS/DNB) rather than a diploma.

Ques. What is the clinical training environment like for PGD students at KEM Hospital?

Ans. KEM Hospital is a 1,500+ bed public tertiary care hospital with extremely high patient volumes across all departments. PGD students get intensive hands-on exposure in OPD, IPD, OT, and emergency settings, which is one of the strongest practical advantages of training at GSMC. The sheer case diversity at KEM Hospital is routinely cited by alumni as the defining benefit of a GSMC postgraduate training.
