Kerala University BEd FAQs
Ques. How is KTET related to Kerala University BEd and when should a student take it?
Ans. KTET (Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test) is the state-level qualifying test for government school teaching appointments in Kerala. A Kerala University BEd from an NCTE-approved college makes a candidate eligible to appear for KTET after completing the degree. Category 1 covers Classes 1 to 5, Category 2 covers Classes 6 to 8, and Category 3 covers Classes 9 to 12. Passing KTET is mandatory for government school recruitment but is not required for private school teaching positions in Kerala.
Ques. How is school teaching practice structured in Kerala University BEd?
Ans. The Kerala University BEd includes a mandatory school internship of 20 weeks spread across both years. Student teachers are attached to government or aided schools where they conduct classroom lessons, prepare lesson plans, and handle observation classes under the supervision of school mentors and training college faculty. The internship is formally evaluated and its marks contribute to the final BEd grade. Students typically complete practice teaching in schools affiliated with their training college within the Thiruvananthapuram district.
Ques. Which BEd specialization should a candidate choose based on their undergraduate degree?
Ans. The BEd specialization must match a main subject from the qualifying undergraduate degree per NCTE guidelines. A BA English graduate should opt for BEd in English, a BSc Mathematics graduate for BEd in Mathematics, and a BCom graduate for BEd in Commerce. Candidates with two relevant subjects can choose either. The choice also depends on government school vacancy patterns, as English, Mathematics and Physical Science typically have more vacancies than some language specializations.
Ques. What government teaching positions can Kerala University BEd graduates apply for?
Ans. With KTET clearance, Kerala University BEd graduates can apply for High School Assistant (HSA) posts for Classes 8 to 10, Upper Primary School Teacher posts for Classes 5 to 7, and specialist Language Teacher posts for Arabic, Sanskrit and Hindi. With CTET in addition, central government school positions under Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti also open up. Recruitment is primarily through Kerala PSC rank lists published separately for each subject specialization.
Ques. What is the difference between a 2-year BEd and an integrated 4-year BEd programme?
Ans. Kerala University offers the standard 2-year BEd as a professional programme after a 3-year or 4-year undergraduate degree. Integrated 4-year BEd programmes like BA BEd or BSc BEd combine subject study with teacher training from Class 12 and are offered by some central universities. Both are NCTE-approved and valid for KTET and government recruitment. The integrated route is faster if started immediately after Class 12, while the 2-year BEd suits candidates who have already completed a subject-area undergraduate degree.
