Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Overview

What is GATE 2026?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). IIT Guwahati organised GATE 2026 for all 30 subject papers.

The exam was held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. Over 10 lakh students registered for the exam, and approximately 7-8 lakh candidates appeared for it.

GATE 2026 Key Statistics

GATE 2026 has recorded registrations exceeding 10 lakh for the first time since 2014. The exam saw high demand in the Computer Science and Data Science fields.

  • Computer Science (CS) and Electronics and Communication (EC) are the most popular papers.
  • Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) is slowly gaining popularity.
  • Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) will use GATE 2026 results of CE, CH, EC, EE, IN and ME test papers for recruitment.

GATE 2026 Answer Key and Response Sheet

The GATE 2026 Response Sheet, Answer Key, and Question Paper have been released at GOAPS by IIT Guwahati. Candidates can download the provisional answer key using their enrollment ID and password.

The answer key challenge process started on February 25, 2026. The last date to raise objections is February 28, 2026.

  • Download the answer key at gate2026.iitg.ac.in
  • IIT Guwahati will release the GATE Final Answer Key after reviewing all raised queries.

GATE 2026 Result Date

As per the official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in, the GATE 2026 results will be declared on 19th March, 2026. The GATE answer key is expected to be released in the last week of February 2026.

What After GATE Exam 2026?

Once the GATE results are released, candidates can choose between two counselling processes: GATE CCMT and GATE COAP 2026. Both processes are for admission to M.Tech programs.

  • GATE COAP counselling is conducted for admission to M.Tech programs in IITs.
  • GATE CCMT 2026 counselling is conducted for admission to M.Tech programs in NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and CFTIs.

PSU Recruitment through GATE 2026

GATE 2026 will also allow candidates to join Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) spread across India. PSUs use the GATE exam score as a criterion for shortlisting eligible candidates for recruitment.

GATE 2026 Registrations and Competition

Over 1 million (10 lakh+) registrations were reported for GATE 2026. The exact numbers are yet to be released.

Computer Science saw a major surge with 200,000+ candidates. Data Science also received high application numbers this year.

While registrations are high, intense competition is generally estimated among roughly 5,000–6,000 serious aspirants.

Expected Cutoffs Based on Past Trends

  • IIT cutoffs for high-demand courses like CSE, ME, and EE are expected in the range of 85-90.
  • NIT cutoffs are expected to be low, in the range of 70-80, for General candidates.
  • Lower NIT cutoffs are due to limited seats at IITs and high competition.
