GATE 2026 Scorecard Validity Key Points
- Used For: M.Tech/Ph.D. admissions in IITs, NITs, and other institutions.
- Job Opportunities: Accepted by PSUs such as BHEL, NTPC, and ONGC for recruitment.
- Multiple scorecards: If a candidate takes GATE more than once, the highest valid score can be used for applications.
How is the GATE Score Calculated?
The GATE score calculation depends on whether the exam was held in a single session or multiple sessions. Normalization is applied for exams conducted in multiple sessions.
Normalization ensures fairness by accounting for variations in difficulty levels between different sessions. For papers like CE and CS that are held in multiple sessions, the candidate's raw marks are normalized.
The GATE Normalized score is calculated using the following factors:
- Your Actual Marks: Marks obtained by the candidate in the session.
- Top 0.1% Score: The average score of the top 0.1% of candidates across all sessions.
- Session Average: The average of the session's mean and standard deviation.
- Normalized Marks: Transformed marks using the formula, considering all normalization factors.
Once the normalized marks are calculated, they are used to determine the candidate's GATE score.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ques: Can I pursue a PhD or research program after GATE 2026?
GATE 2026 Score and Admission
A GATE 2026 score is used for M.Tech and PhD admissions, and for PSU recruitment. The score is given out of 1000, while raw marks are out of 100.
A score of 650–750 out of 1000 is considered a good score. This range can get admission in Mid-tier IITs and NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal).
GATE Score Categories
The table below shows what different GATE score ranges mean for admission and recruitment.
| GATE Score | Category | Admission/Recruitment Opportunities |
|---|---|---|
| 850 – 1000 | Excellent | Direct admission to IISc, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, Top PSU calls (IOCL, ONGC, BHEL) |
| 750 – 850 | Very Good | Admission in Top IITs (IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati), Shortlisting for PSUs like HPCL, NTPC |

Minimum GATE Score for IIT
There is no single minimum GATE score for IITs. The required score depends on the institute, the branch of study, and the candidate's category.
For top IITs and popular streams like Computer Science, general category cutoffs can cross 700 or 750. A score between 500 and 650 may be enough for less competitive branches or newer IITs.
GATE Rank for 70 Marks
The GATE test is scored with 1000 as the highest mark. A score of 70 can correspond to a rank from about 200 to 5000.
The rank varies by branch and year. For example, in Civil, a 70-75 mark range may give a rank of 200–1000, while another analysis shows 2000–5000 for the same range. The difficulty level of the exam and branch competition affect the final rank.
Can 40 Marks Get an IIT Seat
A GATE score of 500-600, which is around 40 raw marks, can allow admission to some IITs. It will not get admission to top IITs such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, or IIT Madras.
Admission with 40 marks depends on the paper, category, and competition level. Raw scores are normalised to a GATE Score out of 1000 for ranking and admissions.
GATE Score Required for IIT Admissions

FAQs
Is it possible to get into IIT Tirupati just by the GATE qualifying marks?
Yes, it is possible to get into IIT Tirupati with GATE 2026 results. IIT Tirupati is a very new IIT, established in 2015.
- It is not well known currently, especially in North India.
- It releases its applications quite early.
- Its MS and PhD batches started only a few years ago, so those with better scores will prefer NITs over IIT Tirupati.
- The cutoff for MS is also low in IIT Madras because very few students are interested in pursuing the course.
How to get admission in MTech through GATE?
To get into an M.Tech program through the GATE exam, registration on specific portals is required.
- Sign up on the COAP portal for IITs.
- Sign up on CCMT portal for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
After registering and receiving a COAP/CCMT ID, apply separately to each IIT and NIT through their individual websites. The application requires GATE details and preferred branches of study.
What is a good GATE rank for IIT?
For the M.Tech program at an IIT, a GATE rank of around 200 is typically the threshold for admission. A GATE rank in the range of 600-800 can still be considered as a good chance.
Some branches like Computer Science and Electrical Engineering often need very high ranks that are much above the others.
Can I join MTech without GATE in IIT?
Yes, there are certain IITs where one can obtain an M.Tech degree without a GATE score. These seats include:
- Sponsoring seats for working professionals.
- A self-sponsoring category.
- Direct admission for a high CGPA.
Some IITs also provide admission based on the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP).

The GATE 2026 score is valid for three years from the date the result was released. The validity period is the same for all participating institutes, including IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
PSUs usually consider the GATE score for recruitment in the same year or the immediate next cycle only.
Use of GATE Score for Admissions
The GATE 2026 scorecard is mandatory for admission to M.Tech, ME, and PhD programs in IITs, NITs, and other participating institutes. Many PSUs also use the GATE score for recruitment.
- The score can be used for PhD admission in 2028 or 2029, as this falls within the three-year validity period.
- Scores over three years old cannot be accepted.
- GATE-qualified students applying for PhD may receive fellowships or assistantships during doctoral studies.
GATE Score Cutoffs for IITs
There is no single minimum GATE score for admission to IITs. The cutoff depends on the specific institute, the area of study, and the candidate's category.
For popular disciplines in the General category, cutoffs may cross 700 or 750. A score in the range of 500 to 650 can be enough for less competitive branches or newer IITs.
Score Requirements by Marks
| Raw Marks | GATE Score Range | Admission Possibility |
|---|---|---|
| Around 40 marks | 500-600 | Admission possible in some IITs, but not IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, or IIT Madras |
| 70 marks | Rank from about 200 to 5000 | Depends on branch and year; Civil branch may see ranks of 200-1000, while other branches may see 2000-5000 for a 70-75 mark range |
GATE Score for PSU Jobs
A score between 600 and 850 or a rank below 1000 is a good benchmark for a strong chance at PSU jobs. The requirement changes greatly depending on the PSU, discipline, and year.
Top PSUs such as ONGC, IOCL, and BHEL generally demand higher scores, with a rank in the top 10% or sometimes under 200. Other companies may set their limits lower.
Job Opportunities After GATE
Private sector jobs are available after GATE. Many private companies consider GATE scores as a measure of technical knowledge.
Candidates can apply in core engineering companies, IT firms, analytics, and research-based companies.
GATE Score and College Selection
For an average GATE score, applying to newer IITs such as IIT Dharwad, IIT Mandi, and IIT Bhubaneswar is advisable. These institutes are expected to have lower cutoffs in interdisciplinary and less competitive branches.
Self-sponsored courses at institutions like IIT Jodhpur and IIT Gandhinagar are options to consider. IIIT Hyderabad evaluates GATE scores along with its own written test and interview for admission.
Admission to IIT Tirupati with Qualifying Marks
Getting into IIT Tirupati with GATE 2026 qualifying marks is possible. IIT Tirupati is a new IIT, established in 2015, and is not well known in North India.
The institute releases its applications early. Its MS and PhD batches started only a few years ago, so candidates with better scores often prefer NITs over IIT Tirupati. The cutoff for MS is also low at IIT Madras because very few students are interested in that course.
M.Tech Admission Process through GATE
Admission to an M.Tech program through GATE requires registration on two portals. Candidates must sign up on the COAP portal for IITs and on the CCMT portal for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
After receiving the COAP or CCMT ID, candidates must apply separately to each IIT and NIT through their individual websites. The application requires GATE details and preferred branches of study.
Good GATE Rank for IIT Admission
A GATE rank of around 200 is typically the threshold for M.Tech admission at an IIT. A rank in the range of 600-800 can still be considered a good chance for admission.
Some branches require much higher ranks. Computer Science and Electrical Engineering often need ranks that are significantly better than those for other branches.
M.Tech Admission without GATE
Certain IITs offer M.Tech admission without a GATE score. These seats fall into specific categories.
- Sponsoring seats for working professionals
- A self-sponsoring category
- Direct admission for a high CGPA
Some IITs also provide admission based on the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP).
