AIIMS Delhi PhD FAQs
Ques. What is the difference between FA and OF categories at AIIMS Delhi PhD?
Ans. FA (Funds Available) seats are backed by a department grant and open to all eligible candidates. OF (Own Fellowship) seats require you to hold a national fellowship such as CSIR-UGC NET JRF or ICMR JRF. OF stipends come from the awarding agency, not AIIMS. Without a fellowship, apply only where FA seats exist.
Ques. Can an MBBS graduate apply for AIIMS Delhi PhD without an M.Sc.?
Ans. Yes. MBBS or BDS with at least 55% aggregate qualifies for the entrance test. MD, MS, MDS, DM, M.Ch., and DNB holders also qualify directly. AIIMS is one of the few programs where a clinician can enter a doctorate without a separate M.Sc. Medical candidates receive 10 marks special weightage in the merit calculation.
Ques. What score clears the AIIMS PhD entrance exam?
Ans. The CBT has 70 MCQs in 90 minutes: 30 aptitude (Stage I) and 40 subject (Stage II). A minimum of 35 combined marks advances you to Stage III. The final score is out of 100 and you need at least 50 for admission. Medical degree holders and national fellowship qualifiers receive 10 additional marks.
Ques. How long is an OF category fellowship valid for AIIMS Delhi PhD?
Ans. AIIMS uses a two-year rolling window. For the July 2026 session, fellowships had to be awarded between July 2024 and May 2026. Older fellowships are not accepted. CSIR-UGC NET JRF, ICMR JRF, DBT JRF, NBHM, and in-service sponsorship qualify. Candidates outside the window can apply for FA seats.
Ques. Does AIIMS Delhi admit PhD scholars twice a year?
Ans. Yes. AIIMS Delhi runs January and July PhD sessions annually. Each has its own notification, entrance exam, and departmental assessment. Seat count varies by session. Notifications appear on aiimsexams.ac.in roughly two months before the exam.
Ques. What careers do AIIMS Delhi PhD graduates typically pursue?
Ans. Most graduates pursue post-doctoral fellowships, faculty positions at medical colleges, or scientist roles at ICMR, CSIR, and DBT. Clinician-researchers with MD or MS degrees often progress to associate or full professor roles. A smaller group joins pharmaceutical or biotech research. The AIIMS name is widely recognised in academic and government research hiring.
