About Bachelor of Physiotherapy [BPT]

The Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) offered through the School of Medical Education (SME) under the Centre for Professional and Advanced Studies (CPAS) - a Government of Kerala body - is a 4-year full-time undergraduate programme followed by a 6-month compulsory internship, affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). The programme covers musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy, and community rehabilitation, preparing graduates for clinical practice in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and sports facilities. MGU BPT FAQs

Ques. Is NEET required for BPT admission at MGU/CPAS Kottayam?

Candidates simply need to register through the LBS Centre (for Government quota) or CPAS (for CPAS quota) and submit their qualifying exam marks. This makes BPT at CPAS/SME accessible to all eligible science students without the pressure of a competitive entrance exam.

Ques. What is the duration of the BPT programme at CPAS/SME under MGU?

Ans. The BPT programme is 4 years in duration, followed by a mandatory 6-month internship. The internship is conducted in affiliated hospitals and is a compulsory requirement for the award of the degree by KUHS. So the total programme duration is effectively 4.5 years. During the internship, students gain hands-on clinical experience in various physiotherapy departments including orthopaedics, neurology, cardiopulmonary, and paediatrics.

Ques. Which centres offer BPT under CPAS/SME, and what is the seat intake?

Ans. BPT is offered at SME centres in Gandhinagar (Kottayam) with 40 seats and Angamaly with 40 seats, totalling 80 seats. Manimalakkunnu is also listed as a centre. Students can submit centre preferences during the allotment process.

Ques. What is the total fee for BPT at CPAS/SME, and how is it paid?

Ans. The total fee for a CPAS/Government seat is Rs. 4,28,965 for the entire 4-year course. Fees are paid semester-wise: the first semester fee (half annual tuition + special fee + caution deposit) is paid at the time of admission. Subsequent odd semester fees (III, V, VII) are due by 5th October each year, and even semester fees (II, IV, VI, VIII) are due by 5th April. Examination fees payable to KUHS are separate. The caution deposit of Rs. 10,000 is refundable at course completion.

Ques. What are the career prospects after BPT from MGU/CPAS?

Ans. BPT graduates from CPAS/SME are eligible for employment as physiotherapists in government and private hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports academies, and community health centres. In Kerala, government job opportunities exist through Kerala PSC for the post of Physiotherapist in government hospitals. Fresh graduates typically earn Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 35,000 per month in Kerala. Graduates can also pursue MPT (Master of Physiotherapy) - which is also offered at CPAS/SME Gandhinagar - for specialization in neurology, musculoskeletal & sports, or cardiology. Kerala physiotherapists are also in high demand in Gulf countries, particularly in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

Ques. Is the BPT degree from CPAS/SME (MGU/KUHS) recognized for government jobs and abroad?

Ans. Yes, the BPT degree from CPAS/SME is affiliated to KUHS (Kerala University of Health Sciences), which is a recognized university under the UGC. The degree is valid for Kerala PSC recruitment, registration with the Kerala Paramedical Council, and for employment in other states. For international practice, particularly in Gulf countries, the KUHS-affiliated BPT degree is generally accepted, though candidates may need to clear the respective country's licensing examination (e.g., DHA exam for Dubai, HAAD for Abu Dhabi, PROMETRIC for Saudi Arabia).
