Medical faculty – the oldest faculty of Siberian State Medical University with more than a century of history and scientific schools recognized worldwide. Medical Faculty – the most numerous – it includes 28 departments that annually produce more than 100 high-class doctors.

In 1888, a medical department was opened in Tomsk – the first in the structure of the Imperial Tomsk University, which gave a start to higher education in the Asian part of Russia and training medical personnel beyond the Urals. Changed the era, the socio-political structure of the state. In 1930, the medical faculty was reorganized and separated into an independent university – the Tomsk State Medical Institute, and its medical faculty, as the legal successor, continued to continue to train medical doctors. Historically, there are several significant periods of faculty development. During the pre-revolutionary period, a number of scientific schools and directions in the field of medicine were formed at the medical faculty of Tomsk University.

The teaching staff includes more than 400 employees – leading medical practitioners with degrees of candidates and doctors of science, every day saving the lives of patients in university hospitals and medical institutions of the Tomsk region, academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, experts of scientific research institutes.

Medical Faculty is currently not only the leader in the Siberian State Medical University but also the largest among the faculties of all universities in Tomsk considering the number of doctors, candidates of sciences, members of state academies and departments. The faculty is also unique because two of the most prestigious clinical specialties – “medical business” and “dentistry” are taught in the SSMU.

Throughout its history, the faculty has prepared more than 20 thousand doctors. Graduates work in all regions of Russia, the CIS republics, in more than 30 countries – Germany, Norway, Israel, USA, Canada, Australia and achieve their high results. Dean Alifirova Valentina, MD, Professor, Head of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, a practicing neurologist of the highest category, the chief neurologist of the Health Department of the Tomsk region.

In all clinical disciplines, from 25% (“medical business”) to 75% (“dentistry”) of hours is devoted to practical training in outpatient clinics. Work practice is conducted in accordance with the state educational standard.

For practice, SMU has contracts with regional and municipal institutions.
